I'm in a position where they're particularly useful to me (undergrad finally setting in on a field after many failed attempts at others, thinking about a research career, and digging like hell through blogs about academic life) and such a thing is appreciated. My grad school cat Taos (I was at UNM) also made it to 17 (passed away in 2001). Must be something about that part of the country. She was never more than 6 lbs and a playful kitten right up to the end. I am not really a sentimental type when it comes to pets, but this one was special. I am so sorry.
